The 2018 Defense Audit marked the first ever department-wide full financial statement audit for the Department of Defense. The results were mixed; but, many people have congratulated the DoD for being able to accomplish an audit of this magnitude. And there is no doubt – this audit is a massive undertaking. Department officials were quick to explain that given the size and scope of the project, there was never any expectation that the audit would be clean in 2018.
However, you can be assured that there will be another audit in 2019 and in fact, the audit process is well under way. Furthermore, there is already pressure from Congress to remediate the issues found as quickly as possible and make significant progress towards a clean audit. This may very well mean that DCMA Auditors will come down hard on inventory tracking and the location of equipment in 2019.
