RFID for Research Facilities

RFID for Research Facilities

By Peter Collins

Labs and research facilities of all kinds struggle with managing the location and movement of their equipment. Sharing specialized tools and equipment with other labs, or with other teams, in the organization may make sense as long as there is a system in place to account for the movement of those items. No one wants to waste valuable research time looking for a piece of equipment that has gone missing.

RFID is rising to this challenge.

RFID technology has seen increased adoption rates in recent years because tracking inventory, equipment and assets has never been more important. Organizations today are moving too fast, with too few people to be able to spend the afternoon searching for a missing piece of equipment.

RFID makes it very easy to justify the investment by providing a major tool to an organization’s asset and inventory tracking strategy. The big benefit of RFID is the ability to perform fast and accurate locating an item (oftentimes autonomously with gateways and portals) using an item’s last known location.

There is also a huge benefit during an audit, where an RFID Tracking system provides the auditors the confidence to know that assets are being tracked with precision and that detailed asset histories are being recorded and stored appropriately.
