Boston and Barcodes: Six Decades of Barcode Tracking

A Lecture by Peter Collins, CEO of A2B Tracking
Somerville Museum – October 8th 6pm

On Wednesday, Oct. 8th at the Somerville Museum, Peter Collins, President & CEO of A2B Tracking, will trace the arc of Auto-ID technology, barcode innovation, and the broader story of asset tracking technologies.

This promises to be more than a technical talk. It’s a journey through more than sixty years of innovation, and a tribute to one of the industry’s true pioneers, David Collins, whose legacy still reverberates in today’s asset tracking systems.

Barcode JourneysYears ago David Collins, “the father of the barcode,” developed a linear tracking technology called KarTrak that was first installed on Boston and Maine railcars that led the way to modern barcodes. A fundamental building block of our modern economy, the barcode is still the backbone for retailing and manufacturing.

Peter Collins, following in his father’s footsteps, is an expert in barcode and RFID technology. Learn about barcode history, protocols, 1D versus 2D codes, and the future of tracking and data management solutions for laboratories, universities and organizations of all sizes.

Barcode Journeys

Come explore Somerville Museum’s current exhibit Barcode Journeys looking at the history, the technology and the pervasiveness of barcode technology in American culture.

Everyday six billion black and white barcodes are scanned as they parade, barely noticed through our lives, stamped on practically everything. Today, a mind-boggling mass of invisible electronic data records our existence. Barcode Journeys explores the pervasiveness of barcodes in our daily lives.

Somerville Museum is located in the heart of the City at the intersection of Central Street and Westwood Road, the Somerville Museum has served as the community’s cultural institution for nearly a century.
